Five teenagers, all just 17, were together when the vehicle they were traveling in left the roadway and plunged down a steep hillside in Grand Junction, Colorado, late Saturday night.

The five young lives have now become the focus of a heartbreaking investigation as their community struggles to understand how an ordinary night could end in such tragedy.

Authorities were not notified until around 7:45 a.m. Sunday, several hours after the incident. By the time the scene was discovered in daylight, the opportunity to change what had happened was already gone.

Investigators are now working to reconstruct the timeline and determine what led the vehicle to leave the road. Speed is reportedly being considered as one possible contributing factor, although the investigation remains ongoing.
