The death of Caroline “Caro” Pena has left five children without their mother, a loss that relatives say is being felt most acutely by the youngest and by the two who are autistic. Pena, 32, died on Thursday after being stabbed multiple times during a confrontation at a home on the 800 block of E. 10th Street in Del Rio, Texas. Video cameras at the residence of Kyandra Renee Faz recorded Pena arriving in a black Dodge pickup, followed by the arrival of Amaya Diaz and Kitty Mia Diaz in a black Chrysler 300.

The footage shows Amaya approaching with an object believed to be a knife and striking Pena, after which blood appeared on her shirt; the other two women then joined the alleged ᴀssault. A pH๏τograph taken in the immediate aftermath showed Pena’s white top covered in blood. Before police arrived, Kitty and Amaya showered and changed out of the clothes they had worn during the incident; officers later noted their wet hair and new outfits, including a revealing black romper worn by Kitty. Both sisters were seen smiling or smirking as they were arrested.

Each of the three women charged—Kitty Mia Diaz, Amaya Diaz, and Kyandra Renee Faz—faces a murder count and a five-million-dollar bond. Pena’s uncle, who has lived in the same small town for decades and once worked with a relative of the defendants, told reporters that the family connections make the tragedy even harder to accept.

He said the children, ranging from nearly three years old to sixteen, are taking the loss the hardest and are currently being cared for by relatives while funeral arrangements are made. Friends of the victim have described the circulating pH๏τograph of her final moments as especially difficult to view because it shows a mother who arrived with nothing but her hands facing three attackers. The case continues to reverberate through the Del Rio community where nearly everyone seems to know someone involved.
