Caroline Pena arrived at a residence in Del Rio, Texas, with nothing in her hands, according to those who knew her and to the description contained in police documents. Within minutes she was involved in a confrontation that left her with multiple stab wounds and led to her death hours later. Surveillance video from the home of Kyandra Renee Faz shows Pena exiting a black Dodge pickup truck. A black Chrysler 300 then arrived, and Amaya Diaz and Kitty Mia Diaz got out. Amaya approached carrying an object believed to be a knife and struck Pena in the back; blood soon became visible on the victim’s shirt.

Kitty and Faz joined the alleged ᴀssault before the women separated and left the scene. A pH๏τograph taken shortly afterward, later posted and then removed from a local Facebook page, showed Pena’s white top soaked with blood while the other women stood nearby. Pena’s friend Zelina Ochoa later remarked that the image was powerful precisely because it illustrated the imbalance: three women arriving with weapons while Caro had only her hands.

After the attack the two sisters showered and changed clothes; officers noted their wet hair and different outfits when they were taken into custody. Kitty had switched into a black romper, and both sisters were observed smiling or smirking during the arrest. All three defendants—Kitty, 21, Amaya, 19, and Faz, 21—were charged with murder and ordered held on five-million-dollar bonds. Pena’s uncle emphasized that in the small town of Del Rio everyone has connections, and that he had worked for three decades with an uncle of the Diaz sisters.

The five children left behind, ages three to sixteen and including two autistic children, are being cared for by relatives while the family makes funeral plans. The video recording of the entire sequence has become central evidence in the case that has shocked the border community.
