They Showered, Changed Clothes, and Smiled: The Chilling Details Police Revealed After a Mother of Five’s Death

In the hours after a fatal confrontation that claimed the life of Caroline Pena, two of the women later charged with her murder took steps that police described in detail in the criminal complaint. Kitty Mia Diaz and her sister Amaya Diaz were observed to have recently showered, their hair still wet, and were no longer wearing the clothing captured on surveillance video of the incident. Instead, when officers took them into custody,

Kitty appeared in a revealing black romper and Amaya was seen smiling and smirking as she was led away. The attack itself occurred at a home on the 800 block of E. 10th Street in Del Rio, Texas, and was recorded by cameras belonging to the third defendant, Kyandra Renee Faz. Footage showed Pena arriving in a black Dodge pickup, followed by the arrival of a black Chrysler 300 from which Amaya and Kitty emerged.

Amaya was seen with an object believed to be a knife and was observed striking Pena, after which blood appeared on the back of the victim’s shirt. The three women then allegedly continued the ᴀssault before the parties separated. Pena, a 32-year-old mother of five, was transported first to a local hospital and later to a San Antonio facility, where she died hours later.

Her uncle, speaking from Del Rio, noted the close ties between the families in the small town and expressed particular concern for the children, the youngest of whom was nearly three and two of whom are autistic. Each of the three defendants faces a murder charge and a five-million-dollar bond. The decision to shower and change clothes before arrest, combined with the recorded smiles during the booking process, has become one of the most discussed aspects of the case among those following the story in the border community.
