New Search in Portugal for Madeleine McCann After 19 Years – What Are Investigators Really Looking For?
Nearly 19 years after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007, German and Portuguese police launched a major new search operation in June 2025 — one of the most extensive since the initial investigation.
The joint operation, conducted on warrants issued by German prosecutors, focused on 21 plots of land in the municipality of Lagos, stretching between the Ocean Club resort where Madeleine disappeared and a ramshackle cottage where prime suspect Christian Brueckner lived at the time. Teams used ground-penetrating radar, excavators, and sniffer dogs to scour disused buildings, scrubland, and rural properties.

What exactly were they searching for?
Authorities have not publicly detailed the precise targets, but sources close to the investigation indicate the operation aimed to locate:
- Madeleine’s remains or burial site
- Personal items belonging to the toddler (clothing, toys, or DNA traces)
- Evidence linking Brueckner to the scene (tools, vehicles, or hidden belongings)
- Any forensic material that could strengthen the case for abduction and murder
Brueckner, 49, remains the only named prime suspect. German prosecutors have long maintained he “relatively quickly killed the girl” after abducting her. His phone was traced near Praia da Luz that night, and he has a documented history of Sєx crimes in the area. He was released from a German prison in September 2025 after serving a sentence for the 2005 rape of an elderly American woman in Portugal and is now under monitoring.
The search, which ran from June 2–6, 2025, concluded without any public breakthrough or arrests. Portuguese police described it as a “thorough examination” of areas previously overlooked or not fully explored. No charges have ever been filed against Brueckner in the McCann case, and he continues to deny involvement.

The McCann family has welcomed every new effort, stating their sole focus remains finding their daughter. British police continue to support the investigation, while German authorities have pushed for extradition so Brueckner can face trial in the UK.
After nearly two decades, the question remains: Will this latest search — or the next one — finally deliver the answers the world has been waiting for?
