For twin sisters Kiraz and Aruna, their first birthday marked the beginning of one of the most extraordinary medical journeys imaginable. 👶👶💗

Born in Brazil joined at the chest, abdomen, and pelvis, the sisters spent the first year of their lives physically connected. They depended on constant medical care while doctors carefully prepared for a procedure that could completely change their futures.

Kiraz and Aruna were born with an exceptionally rare form of conjoined twinning known as tripus ischiopagus, in which twins are joined at the pelvis and share three legs between them.

The sisters also shared several vital organs, making separation an incredibly complex and risky undertaking. 🏥

Because every case of conjoined twins is different, doctors must understand exactly how the children are connected before attempting separation. In Kiraz and Aruna’s case, months of detailed planning were required before surgeons could even consider the operation.

Then came the day their family had been waiting for.

On May 10, when the girls were just one year old, nearly 60 healthcare professionals gathered at a children’s hospital in Goiás, Brazil, for an extraordinary 15-hour operation. ⏳🩺

The team included 16 surgeons, along with anesthesiologists, pediatricians, urologists, orthopedic specialists, residents, and nurses.

To maintain precision and reduce exhaustion during the marathon procedure, medical staff worked in carefully coordinated shifts.

Lead surgeon Dr. Zacharias Calil described the operation as one of the most complex procedures his team had ever undertaken.

But the surgery had actually begun months earlier.

Approximately six months before the separation, doctors placed tissue expanders beneath the girls’ skin.

These specialized devices gradually stretched healthy skin, allowing the surgeons to create additional tissue that could later be used to reconstruct the areas affected by the separation. This preparation was crucial in helping the team close and rebuild the girls’ bodies after they were separated. 💗

After nearly 15 hours of painstaking work, Kiraz and Aruna were finally separated.

The sisters were then transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit, where they continued recovering in stable condition under close medical observation. 🙏✨

But although the separation represented an incredible milestone, it was only the beginning of another chapter.

The girls will need additional reconstructive procedures and ongoing rehabilitation as their bodies heal and they learn to adapt to life independently.

Conjoined twins are among the rarest conditions in medicine, occurring in roughly one out of every 200,000 births. Every case presents its own unique challenges, particularly when the children share major organs or other vital structures.
