When 8-year-old Brayden Auten suddenly became seriously ill in April 2019, his family had no idea how quickly their lives were about to change.

Brayden, from Wisconsin, initially developed stomach pain and diarrhea. Within days, however, his condition took a frightening turn.

His skin and eyes began turning yellow, and doctors discovered that his liver was failing.

The situation deteriorated rapidly.

Brayden urgently needed a liver transplant, but finding a suitable donor became a major challenge. Family members and friends were tested, hoping one of them could provide the organ he desperately needed.

No suitable donor was found.

Doctors were also unable to determine exactly what had caused Brayden’s liver to fail.

Then a woman who had never met him heard his story.

Cami Loritz, a transplant ICU nurse at Froedtert Hospital, learned about Brayden’s desperate need for a donor.

She could have simply felt sympathy for his family and moved on.

Instead, she volunteered to be tested.

The results revealed that Cami could donate part of her liver to Brayden.

She made the extraordinary decision to become a living donor for a child she had never met.

On May 14, Cami and Brayden underwent surgeries at separate hospitals.

The transplant was successful.

For Brayden, it meant something incredibly precious: another chance at life.

Two weeks after the surgery, he finally met the woman whose decision had helped make that second chance possible.

The meeting was emotional.

Brayden hugged Cami, and what began as an anonymous act of generosity eventually developed into a relationship that went far beyond the transplant.

Over time, Brayden’s family began considering Cami part of their family. Brayden even came to see her as something like a big sister.

Cami later shared their story to encourage others to learn more about living organ donation, showing how one person’s decision can have an extraordinary impact on another family.

What makes the story especially remarkable is how little Cami knew about Brayden when she made her decision.

She wasn’t related to him.

She had never met him.

She didn’t know his family.

She simply learned that an 8-year-old child was running out of options — and realized she might be able to help.

Her decision required courage, compᴀssion and a willingness to undergo major surgery for someone who had been a complete stranger.

For Brayden and his family, however, Cami would never remain a stranger.

She became part of their story — and ultimately, part of their family.

Her gift is a powerful reminder that sometimes the people who change our lives aren’t the ones we were born related to.
