PART 2: THE TRUTH BENEATH THE BRUISE

PART 2: THE TRUTH BENEATH THE BRUISE
“Mrs. Russell… don’t answer that yet.”
The nurse’s voice was barely above a whisper.
I looked at Mason.
“What did you see?”
She gently lifted the edge of the baby’s onesie.
There was another bruise beneath the first.
And another.
Small, dark fingerprints covered his ribs.
My stomach turned.
“How long has this been happening?”
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
The nurse immediately called the pediatric doctor.
Within minutes, Mason was taken into an examination room.
The doctors discovered several injuries at different stages of healing.
Some were recent.
Others were older.
Someone had been hurting my grandson for weeks.
I finally answered Thomas’s call.
“Mom, where are you?”
“At St. Vincent’s.”
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
“Why?”
“Mason is being examined.”
Another long pause.
“You took his clothes off?”
I felt my blood run cold.
“Yes.”
Thomas didn’t ask if Mason was okay.
He didn’t ask what the doctors had found.
He only whispered:
“Mom… you weren’t supposed to do that.”
I stared at the phone.
“What does that mean?”
He hung up.
A detective arrived shortly afterward.
I told her everything.
The warning.
The bruises.
The phone call.
The detective listened carefully.
Then she asked one question.
“Has anyone else had access to Mason?”
I thought about the spotless apartment.
The bleach smell.
The locked bedroom.
Then I remembered something.
A baby monitor.
Thomas had installed it only two weeks earlier.
I had always thought that was strange.
The detective contacted the police, and they obtained the recording.
What appeared on the screen made my heart shatter.
Thomas wasn’t hurting Mason.
Neither was Ellie.
It was someone else.
Someone entering the apartment late at night.
Someone wearing gloves.
Then the camera angle changed.
The person removed the gloves.
I recognized her immediately.
Ellie’s mother.
Mason’s grandmother.
But the biggest shock came next.
She wasn’t alone.
A man entered behind her.
Thomas.
I covered my mouth.
My son had known.
The detective played the final recording.
Thomas was holding Mason while his mother stood beside him.
“He’ll never tell anyone,” she said.
Thomas looked terrified.
“What if Mom finds out?”
His mother answered:
“Then we make sure she doesn’t get close enough to ask questions.”
I couldn’t breathe.
My own son had known his baby was being hurt.
The detective turned off the recording.
“We need to find Thomas immediately.”
But before she could leave, my phone buzzed again.
A message from Thomas.
Mom, I’m sorry.
Then another.
I never wanted this to happen.
And finally:
Please don’t trust Ellie.
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly, there was another question.
If Thomas wasn’t the one hurting Mason…
why was he warning me about his own wife?
The detective looked at me.
“Mrs. Russell, there is something else.”
She placed a folder on the table.
Inside was a medical report from before Mason was born.
It contained one sentence that made everything even more disturbing:
“Mother reports concerns regarding domestic violence but refuses further ᴀssistance.”
The mother’s name was Ellie.
I looked at Mason through the glᴀss.
Then at the report.
Someone had been warning doctors long before my grandson was born.
And somehow, nobody had stopped it.
The detective closed the folder.
“We’re going to find out exactly what happened.”
I reached for Mason’s tiny hand.
His fingers wrapped weakly around mine.
For the first time since I had arrived at the hospital, he stopped crying.
And I made myself a promise.
Whoever had hurt my grandson—
I would make sure they could never get near him again.
