Part 2: THE SECRET EMILY BURIED BEHIND THE WALL
Ryan couldn’t breathe.
The little girl was staring at him as if she had been waiting years for that moment.
Emily rushed forward.
“Don’t listen to her!” she cried.
But Ryan stepped between them.
“How does she know me?”
Emily said nothing.
The girl clutched the blanket around her shoulders and whispered, “Mommy told me you couldn’t know about me.”
Ryan slowly turned toward his wife.
“Mommy?”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
The truth came out in fragments.
Years earlier, before Ryan and Emily had met, Emily had given birth to a daughter. The child’s name was Sophie.
But Sophie had disappeared from her life after a devastating family dispute. Emily had been told the girl was gone forever.
At least, that was what she had told Ryan.
What Emily never told him was that Sophie had been secretly brought back into the house months earlier.
She had been living inside the abandoned service space behind the bedroom wall because Emily’s father had threatened to take the child away if anyone discovered she was there.
Ryan stared at the little girl.
“Why did she call me Daddy?”
Emily began crying.
“Because she is your daughter.”
Silence filled the room.
Ryan’s mind raced.
The dates.
The pH๏τographs.
The strange stories Emily had always refused to explain.
Suddenly, everything began fitting together.
But there was one question that frightened him more than all the others.
“If she’s my daughter… why did you hide her from me?”
Emily looked toward the hallway.
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because the person who put her behind that wall wasn’t my father.”
Ryan froze.
“Then who was it?”
Emily pointed toward the basement door.
And from downstairs came the sound of someone turning the lock.
Someone was still inside the house.
And they had just heard everything.
