The newly reported 911 audio captures the frantic confusion that followed.

Laurie Schneider, who was also aboard the boat, was desperately trying to communicate with the dispatcher while her husband searched the dark water for one of the children.

At one point, she struggled to establish exactly where the crash had occurred, asking whether they were near Channel Marker 39 while explaining that Stephen was still in the water searching for the child.

The adults eventually pulled both children from the water and brought them toward shore. Emergency responders arrived, and the children were transported to a hospital, but neither survived.

The tragedy has since led to criminal charges against Schneider. Authorities allege he was impaired by alcohol while operating the vessel. He faces two counts of reckless vessel homicide/death by vessel, along with charges related to operating a vessel under the influence and reckless operation. Those allegations remain matters for the court to determine.

What makes the newly released recording particularly difficult to hear is the sense of confusion and urgency in those first moments — a family suddenly trying to locate two children in the darkness while emergency responders worked to understand what had happened.

The case has also drawn attention to the importance of boating safety and the devastating consequences that can follow when a family outing suddenly goes wrong.
