A U.S. Postal Service employee in Florida has been arrested after investigators accused her of stealing a winning lottery ticket from the mail and claiming the prize as her own.

According to the Florida Lottery, a joint investigation involving the Florida Lottery Division of Security and the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) led to the arrest of Lakaysha Lockhart, a USPS letter carrier, in connection with the case. 🚨

📩 A Winning Ticket That Never Arrived
The investigation began after a Florida resident purchased a winning lottery ticket and verified that it had a prize.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, the ticket’s owner mailed it to a family member in South Florida to help cover funeral expenses.

However, the envelope never reached its intended destination.

After realizing the ticket had not been delivered, the buyer contacted the Florida Lottery to report that the winning ticket had apparently gone missing while in the custody of the U.S. Postal Service.

🎟️ Authorities Say the Ticket Was Cashed
Investigators allege that Lockhart redeemed the ticket on June 19 at the Florida Lottery’s Miami District Office.

According to the arrest affidavit, the ticket carried a prize worth $2,600.

Under Florida law, lottery prizes exceeding $599 must be redeemed in person at an official Florida Lottery office.

Authorities say the investigation ultimately linked the redeemed ticket to the one reported missing in the mail.

According to the Florida Lottery, Lockhart was arrested on July 31 in connection with the investigation.

Officials said that following her arrest, she allegedly admitted to taking the winning lottery ticket from the mail and redeeming it herself.
