VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has called on Catholics to rediscover the rich signs and symbols of the Church’s sacred liturgy, emphasizing that they are far more than ceremonial gestures—they are profound expressions of spiritual realities that draw believers into the mystery of God.

Speaking during a catechetical address on worship, the Pope explained that the liturgy communicates through words, actions, music, silence, sacred objects, and ritual movements. These visible signs, he said, help reveal the invisible grace of God and enable the faithful to participate more deeply in the Church’s prayer.

“The signs and symbols of the liturgy speak a language of faith,” Pope Leo said. “When we understand them, they help us enter more fully into the mystery we celebrate.” He encouraged Catholics to move beyond viewing liturgical practices as routine customs and instead recognize their biblical and theological significance.
