👶💙 Toddler’s Rare Eye Condition Highlights an Important Health Lesson for Families

What began as what seemed to be a simple eye infection turned into an unexpected medical journey for two-year-old Juwan and his family.
The little boy is continuing to receive specialized care after developing a rare eye condition caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), the same virus most commonly linked to cold sores.
His mother, Michelle Saaiman, said the family initially believed Juwan had a routine eye infection. Although he was treated with antibiotics, his eye continued to worsen, prompting them to seek further medical advice.

Specialists eventually diagnosed Juwan with ocular herpes—a rare condition that occurs when HSV infects the cornea. By the time the diagnosis was made, the virus had caused extensive damage, leaving him with permanent vision loss in his left eye.
According to his family, the infection also caused severe dryness and a hole in the cornea, creating ongoing complications that require long-term medical care.
Since then, Juwan has undergone multiple procedures, including surgery using an amniotic membrane graft. Doctors are now planning additional treatments, including a nerve transplant, with the hope that he may one day become a candidate for a corneal transplant.
Michelle said the family never imagined that a virus commonly ᴀssociated with cold sores could, in rare cases, lead to such serious complications—especially in a young child.
Medical experts explain that HSV is extremely common and is usually spread through close personal contact, particularly when someone has an active cold sore. While most infections are mild, the virus can occasionally cause severe illness in babies and young children, including infections affecting the eyes.
To help reduce the risk, health professionals recommend avoiding kissing infants or young children when a cold sore is present and practicing careful hand hygiene before close contact.
By sharing Juwan’s experience, his parents hope more families will become aware of these simple but important precautions that may help protect young children from preventable infections.
Today, Juwan continues to face each challenge with remarkable courage, surrounded by the love of his family and the dedication of his medical team.
💙🕊️ His journey is a powerful reminder that even small acts of awareness can make a meaningful difference in protecting a child’s health.
