More than seven months after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home, investigators are still working to determine what happened to the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie.

Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2026, after spending time with family. She was dropped off at her home at about 9:48 p.m. The following morning, a masked individual was captured tampering with a doorbell camera at the residence. Investigators later said evidence at the home indicated that Nancy had been taken against her will.

The case quickly became a major national investigation involving the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. Authorities released surveillance images of a man they believe may be connected to the abduction. The person was described as being around 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10, with an average build, and wearing a black backpack.

Investigators have followed thousands of tips and conducted searches in Arizona and surrounding areas. At one point, a man was detained for questioning after authorities followed a lead, but he was released and has not been publicly identified as a suspect in Nancy’s disappearance.

Another major development involved ransom notes. Authorities eventually released the contents of two notes that had been received during the investigation. The notes fueled questions about whether the person responsible was genuinely seeking money or attempting to mislead investigators. Officials have not publicly confirmed who wrote them or whether the demands were connected to Nancy’s disappearance.

Evidence collected from Nancy’s home has also produced few clear answers. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in late July that hair recovered at the residence had produced inconclusive results, while other DNA and blood evidence had not identified a suspect.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough, investigators continue to describe the case as active. Sheriff Nanos said the investigation has made progress and that authorities are continuing to pursue leads. Crime reporter Brian Entin also recently reported that a dedicated task force remains focused on the case, with investigators working on it full time.

The search has also faced complications, including conflicting information, false or questionable leads and intense public attention. In August, human remains were discovered in a desert area roughly 15 miles from Nancy’s home, but authorities said there was no indication at the time that the remains were connected to her case.

Nancy’s family continues to appeal to the public for information. Savannah Guthrie has repeatedly asked anyone who may know something about her mother’s disappearance to come forward.

As of September 2026, Nancy Guthrie has not been located and no one has been arrested or charged in connection with her disappearance. Investigators continue to examine evidence, follow leads and search for the information that could finally explain what happened during the early morning hours of February 1.
