When Sierra and Dustin Yoder learned that their unborn baby had an extremely rare condition called encephalocele, their world was turned upside down. 💔

The tissue doctors had initially believed might not function was actually helping him develop.

Could it safely be placed back inside his skull?

The family eventually traveled to Boston Children’s Hospital, where specialists carefully evaluated Bentley.

They discovered that a significant portion of his brain was outside his skull—but remarkably, Bentley was using it.

Instead of removing the tissue, surgeons developed an extraordinary plan to create enough room inside his skull to bring the functioning brain tissue back where it belonged. 🏥💙

To prepare for the complicated procedure, the medical team created 3-D printed models of Bentley’s skull.

They used the models to carefully plan and practice the operation before performing it on the tiny baby.

The surgical team planned to make several precise openings in his skull and use special dissolving plates to gradually expand the space.

Then, his brain could be carefully returned inside his skull.

On May 24, Bentley underwent the surgery.

Five long hours later, he was in recovery.

His tiny head was wrapped in bandages, and he wore a little hospital gown.

But when his family saw him, they witnessed something they had once been told might never happen.

Bentley was awake.

He was looking at his parents, grandparents, and big brother Beau.

He wasn’t crying.

He wasn’t distressed.

He was simply looking around and taking everything in. 🥹💙

For Sierra, that moment was overwhelming.

The little boy doctors once believed might not survive was now awake after one of the most extraordinary surgeries imaginable.
