To strangers, two-year-old Betty looks like any other happy, energetic little girl.

She loves Bluey, Peppa Pig, and Miss Rachel. She laughs, plays, explores the world around her, and fills her family’s home with joy. 💗👧

But behind that bright smile is a heartbreaking reality.

Betty has terminal neuroblastoma, and her parents, Alicia Rickman and Kelvin Gale, are desperately trying to raise £625,000 to give their little girl another chance at life.

The nightmare began in June 2025, when Betty developed a persistent fever that lasted around 10 days.

She stopped eating and drinking.

She became pale, sleepy, and unusually tired.

Even her nursery noticed that something wasn’t right.

At first, Alicia believed Betty might have an infection.

She took her to the doctor repeatedly, but the symptoms continued.

Eventually, medical staff at an urgent treatment centre sent her to Southampton for further ᴀssessment.

That’s when doctors realized the situation was far more serious than anyone had imagined.

Blood tests showed that Betty’s levels were dangerously low, raising concerns that she could have cancer. 💔

Alicia struggled to understand what she was hearing.

Her daughter didn’t look seriously ill.

She was still developing well.

She was still talking.

She was still full of life.

Then came the devastating diagnosis:

Neuroblastoma.

Betty immediately began an intense course of treatment.

She underwent eight rounds of rapid chemotherapy, followed by additional chemotherapy and immunotherapy. She also underwent stem-cell harvesting, surgery, and 12 sessions of radiotherapy involving her brain, spine, and abdomen.

Then, in July 2025, another terrifying crisis struck.

Betty’s abdominal tumour haemorrhaged.

She suffered a mᴀssive internal bleed and nearly died.

One moment, she was sitting up watching nursery rhymes in hospital.

The next, she was on a ventilator in intensive care.

For Alicia, it felt unreal.

Yet Betty kept fighting. 🙏💗

At one point, scans appeared to show no active neuroblastoma cells in her body.

Her family dared to hope that perhaps the worst was finally behind them.

But cancer had other plans.

In July 2026, new scans revealed that the disease had progressed to leptomeningeal disease, meaning cancer had spread to the fluid surrounding her brain.

Doctors also found disease involving her right knee, diaphragm, and bone marrow.

The largest area in the brain fluid measured around 5mm.

Doctors have now told the family that Betty’s prognosis is terminal, and that they no longer believe the NHS treatment available to her can cure the disease.

For Alicia and Kelvin, accepting that answer is impossible.

They refuse to stop fighting for their little girl. 💔🙏

The family is trying to raise £625,000 to take Betty to SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital in Spain, where they hope she can receive an alternative treatment known as RIST, alongside immunotherapy and continued treatment with lorlatinib, which targets an ALK mutation she carries.

So far, their fundraising campaign has raised around £16,000, leaving an enormous amount still to reach their goal.

For Alicia, the thought of losing her daughter is almost impossible to comprehend.

Betty doesn’t understand what the doctors mean when they say her illness is terminal.

She doesn’t know that her family is racing against time.

She simply knows that she loves life.

She loves cartoons.

She loves playing.

She loves the people around her.

Her mother describes her as one of the most fun-loving, kind, and funny children she has ever known.

Betty knows she has to take medicine, which her family affectionately calls “wiggle juice.”

She also loves the playroom and the specialists who help make life in hospital a little brighter.
