Seven people lost their lives in the early hours of Saturday, 22 August 2026, when a Volkswagen Pᴀssat travelling the wrong way along the A66 near Middlesbrough collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. The five occupants of the Pᴀssat and the two police officers inside the force car were all pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene.

The young men who died in the Pᴀssat have been named as Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Jacob Matusiak, 23; Theo Rae, 17; Cole Robert Worthy, 16; and Makai Saddington, 18. The two officers killed were PC Matthew Blades, 37, a husband and father of two, and PC Tom Clough, 38. Their armed response vehicle was travelling in the correct direction when the collision occurred.

According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), officers had been pursuing the Pᴀssat for just under seven minutes after the vehicle was identified as suspicious. The car was believed to be using cloned registration plates that had activated an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera. Cleveland Police confirmed that twelve people — nine men and three women aged between 19 and 61 — had been arrested across Teesside. They are being held on suspicion of a range of offences, including possession of a firearm and participation in the activities of an organised crime group. A second vehicle, a Volvo XC60 believed to have been ᴀssociated with the Pᴀssat, was recovered after reports that it had been involved in dangerous driving and had rammed properties in the Middlesbrough area earlier that morning. Residents living near the route of the pursuit reported being woken in the early hours by the sound of multiple police vehicles travelling at high speed with lights and sirens activated. Doorbell camera footage later emerged showing a car being followed by police vehicles minutes before the fatal collision on the dual carriageway.
