Jamie Varley carefully constructed an image of success and happiness that fooled almost everyone who followed his social media. His Instagram account showed a spotless Blackpool home, a beloved dog, a solid career as a high school teacher and head of year, and the exciting arrival of a baby boy the couple had waited years to adopt. There were pH๏τos of a celebration complete with balloons, cake and a specially painted mural bearing the name Preston Elijah. Friends saw a loving partnership between Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley that appeared ready for parenthood. The reality that emerged in court was the complete opposite. After an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, Varley was convicted of murdering 13-month-old Preston Davey and of a series of related offences including Sєxual ᴀssault and child cruelty. On 18 June 2026 Mr Justice Turner imposed a whole-life order, telling the 37-year-old former teacher that he would never be released from prison.

Preston was born on 16 June 2022 and removed from his biological mother within days under an emergency care order. Sarah Davey had a serious criminal history that included a conviction for murder committed when she was only 14. The baby spent his first months with foster carers before being placed with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023 when he was nine months old. The couple had been approved for adoption earlier that year and had planned carefully for the child’s arrival. Varley took a year off from his job at South Shore Academy, where he also held a pastoral role as designated safeguarding lead, so that he could care for Preston full-time. McGowan-Fazakerley continued working as a sales manager.

Over the four months that followed, the public image of a happy family hid sustained physical, Sєxual and emotional abuse. Detectives later said Preston had been treated as a plaything. On 27 July 2023 Varley brought the child to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest and claimed the toddler had accidentally drowned in the bath after being left alone for a few minutes. Hospital staff immediately noticed that Preston was dry and that there was no sign he had swallowed water. A post-mortem examination later revealed around 40 traumatic injuries. Medical experts rejected the drowning explanation entirely, finding no supporting evidence and determining that the cause of death was acute upper airway obstruction consistent with a deliberate act.

The jury at Preston Crown Court heard detailed medical evidence and rejected Varley’s account. He was found guilty of murder, multiple counts of Sєxual ᴀssault and child cruelty, grievous bodily harm, and offences involving indecent images of the child. McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty and Sєxual ᴀssault. In sentencing, the judge described the case as one of the utmost gravity, noting the extreme vulnerability of a baby, the prolonged suffering inflicted, and the profound breach of trust. Varley was told he would spend the rest of his life in prison. His partner received a 25-year sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows, who led the investigation, later spoke about the contrast between the couple’s online presentation and the truth inside the home. Everything looked perfect on social media, he said, yet the reality was entirely different. Arguments, long working hours and deep problems within the household had been carefully hidden. The case has prompted ongoing reviews by social services into how the adoption was ᴀssessed and monitored. Preston Davey’s short life ended in the care of the two men who had been trusted to protect him. The whole-life order imposed on Jamie Varley stands as a rare and severe response to crimes that the court found to be of exceptional seriousness.
