What began as what seemed like an ordinary childhood illness quickly became a life-threatening medical emergency that changed one little boy’s life forever.

Ryan, a happy and energetic one-year-old from Broken Hill, New South Wales, developed a Strep A infection that rapidly progressed to sepsis, leading to months of intensive treatment and multiple amputations.

💔 His mother, Jessica, said Ryan initially showed symptoms that looked like a common cold.

“Ryan was a happy, cheeky, and healthy little boy before he became sick,” she shared.
In December, he developed a runny nose and cold-like symptoms. But soon afterward, his condition worsened dramatically.

Ryan developed an extremely high fever, became unusually lethargic, refused to walk, and no longer acted like himself.

Despite several visits to the hospital, his health continued to deteriorate.

“He started to get a rash, his heart rate increased, and he needed oxygen,” Jessica recalled.
✈️ Ryan and his mother were urgently flown to Adelaide for specialist care.

Shortly after arriving, Ryan suffered cardiac arrest and his heart stopped for 10 minutes.

“We were told Ryan wasn’t going to make it. But after ten minutes of CPR, thankfully he came back to us.”
Doctors soon confirmed that Ryan was experiencing severe septic shock, a life-threatening condition in which the body’s response to infection causes widespread damage to its own organs and tissues.

Although doctors were able to save his life, the infection had severely affected blood flow to his limbs.

💙 To save him, surgeons had to perform multiple amputations.

Ryan lost both legs below the knees, all of his fingertips, and several fingers, becoming a bilateral amputee before his second birthday.

After four long months in the hospital, Ryan was finally able to return home.

Jessica says the support they received from family, friends, and complete strangers made an enormous difference during the most difficult time of their lives.

🌟 More than a year later, Ryan continues to amaze everyone with his determination.

His journey now includes regular trips back to Adelaide every one to two months for medical appointments, surgeries, physiotherapy, and prosthetic fittings.

One of the family’s proudest moments has been watching Ryan begin to take his first steps using his prosthetic legs and walker.

“We can’t wait to see all the amazing things he continues to do,” Jessica said.
❤️ Today, Jessica works closely with Sepsis Australia to raise awareness about the dangers of sepsis and the importance of recognizing it early.

She hopes Ryan’s story will encourage families to seek urgent medical care whenever something doesn’t seem right.

“Sepsis can happen to anyone, and any infection can lead to sepsis. One message we really want people to remember is to ask, ‘Could it be sepsis?’”
Her advice to other parents is simple but powerful:

“Always trust your instincts when it comes to your children. The sooner sepsis is recognized and treated, the better the chance of survival.”
