PART 2: THE SECRET HER MOTHER TOOK TO THE GRAVE

Abby stared at the words.

Protect my daughter.

Her hands began shaking.

“What does that mean?”

Julian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

“Your mother worked for my family twenty-seven years ago.”

Abby frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“She wasn’t a cleaner.”

Julian turned around.

“She was my father’s personal ᴀssistant.”

Abby felt the room spin.

“My mother never told me that.”

“She had a reason.”

Julian opened a locked drawer and removed a thin file.

Inside were old pH๏τographs, financial records, and a birth certificate.

Abby’s eyes widened.

There was her mother’s name.

And beside it was another name.

Julian’s father.

Abby looked at him in confusion.

“Was my mother involved with your family?”

“She discovered that my father had been stealing millions from the company.”

Julian paused.

“She found the evidence and planned to expose him.”

“But she never did.”

“No.”

Julian handed Abby another pH๏τograph.

It showed her mother holding a baby.

Abby stared at the image.

“That baby…”

“Was you.”

Abby looked up.

“My mother knew my father?”

Julian shook his head.

“She never told anyone who your biological father was.”

Abby’s heart pounded.

“Why?”

“Because she was afraid he’d come looking for you.”

Silence filled the room.

Then Julian revealed the part he had kept hidden.

“Your mother didn’t die because of an illness.”

Abby’s face went numb.

“What?”

“She was killed because she refused to reveal where she’d hidden the evidence.”

Abby covered her mouth.

For years, she had believed her mother simply lost her battle with cancer.

Julian stepped closer.

“Your mother left that feather duster for a reason.”

Abby looked toward her cleaning cart.

“There’s something inside it.”

She immediately grabbed it.

After searching the handle, she discovered a tiny compartment hidden beneath the worn wood.

Inside was a small memory card.

Julian stared at it.

“My father spent twenty years looking for that.”

Abby looked at him.

“Why are you telling me all this?”

Julian’s expression softened.

“Because I didn’t put three hundred thousand dollars on that dresser to test whether you were honest.”

He took a breath.

“I put it there because I knew your family needed it.”

Abby stared at him.

“And the test?”

Julian looked at the memory card.

“I needed to know whether I could trust the woman who was about to help me destroy my own father’s legacy.”

Abby looked down at the card.

Then at Julian.

For the first time, she realized the money on the dresser had never been the real opportunity.

It had been an invitation.

And accepting it meant stepping into a secret that could put both their lives in danger.
