PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ᴅᴇᴀᴅ

PART 2: THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ᴅᴇᴀᴅ

The police arrived before Ryan could say another word.

They forced open the cabinet.

Inside were bottles of medication, medical records, pH๏τographs, and a stack of envelopes.

Then I saw it.

A pH๏τograph of Ryan’s first wife.

She was alive.

And she was holding a baby.

My baby.

I turned toward Ryan.

“What is this?”

He finally broke.

“She isn’t ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.”

My entire body went cold.

“Then where is she?”

Ryan lowered his head.

“She became sick after Lily was born.”

I stared at him.

“You told me she died five years ago.”

“I was afraid you’d leave me if you knew.”

“Afraid?”

My voice shook.

“You let me believe your wife was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ while her prescription was being used on our daughter?”

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“I never gave Lily that medicine.”

Diane started crying.

“I did.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She explained that Ryan’s first wife had been living in a private care facility under another name.

She had been diagnosed with a condition that affected her memory and ability to communicate.

For years, Diane had secretly visited her.

But recently, the woman had started remembering things.

Especially Lily.

And she had been asking for her daughter.

Diane had been giving Lily tiny doses of the medication because she believed it would calm her whenever the child became frightened.

But she had never told Ryan.

The paramedic looked at the bottle again.

“This dosage is not safe for a two-year-old.”

I pulled Lily closer.

Then I noticed something strange in the pH๏τograph.

Behind Ryan’s first wife was a familiar wall.

The same wall inside our house.

I looked at Ryan.

“She was here?”

He went silent.

Diane whispered:

“She lived in this house before you did.”

My heart stopped.

Then Lily suddenly pointed toward the basement.

“Mommy’s friend is down there.”

Ryan’s face turned completely white.

“What did you say?”

Lily repeated:

“The lady who talks to Grandma.”

Nobody moved.

Then we heard it.

Three slow knocks.

Coming from behind the locked basement door.

Ryan stepped backward.

The police officer reached for his weapon.

And from the other side of the door, a woman’s trembling voice whispered:

“Ryan…”

A pause.

“Why did you tell her I was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ?”
