Jamie Varley looked every bit the model educator and social-media father. As a teacher and designated safeguarding lead at South Shore Academy in Blackpool he carried professional responsibility for child welfare, yet the same man who posed for loving pH๏τographs and celebrated the adoption of Preston Davey was simultaneously subjecting the infant to escalating abuse. The couple, who met in Manchester’s Gay Village in 2018 and pursued parenthood with visible determination, created an online narrative of perfection: an immaculate house, career progress, their dog Maximus and, after approval in January 2023, the arrival of the baby they named Preston Elijah. They marked the occasion with a Chosen Shower featuring cake, decorations and a balloon arch, and Varley painted a mural in the living room. Followers and professionals saw only stability and joy.

Inside that house a different story unfolded. Preston, born 16 June 2022 and placed in foster care almost immediately because his biological mother had been imprisoned as a teenager for murder and continued a cycle of offending, was nine months old when he joined the household in April 2023. Over the next four months he was admitted to hospital three times with injuries that later proved non-accidental: a nosebleed and seizure, a rash with bruising, and a fractured elbow. On 27 July Varley arrived at Blackpool Victoria Hospital claiming he had left the child unattended in the bath for only a couple of minutes. The toddler was dry, showed no evidence of drowning, and efforts to revive him failed. The post-mortem examination documented forty external and internal trauma injuries, several consistent with Sєxual penetration, and established that death resulted from smothering. Medical evidence dismantled the accident narrative completely.

During the subsequent eight-week trial the contrast between the smiling pH๏τographs and the forensic findings became undeniable. Varley was convicted of murder, multiple Sєxual offences including ᴀssault by penetration, cruelty, grievous bodily harm and the making and distribution of indecent images. His partner John McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing the death, cruelty and Sєxual ᴀssault. The judge imposed a whole-life order on the thirty-seven-year-old teacher, declaring the gravity of the case required that he remain in prison for the rest of his life with no prospect of parole. McGowan-Fazakerley received twenty-five years. Detectives described Varley as a serial manipulator who had used charm and professional status to reᴀssure those charged with monitoring the adoption, while the medical record revealed months of unremitting harm. The pH๏τographs that once projected an ideal family life now serve as a stark reminder of how thoroughly darkness can take hold behind a public smile, and how medical evidence ultimately forced the truth into the open.
