Pope Leo XIV: Catholic Communities Must Evangelize Youth Amid Spiritual Poverty!lh

In a strong appeal to Catholic communities worldwide, Pope Leo XIV said that the Church must intensify its mission of evangelizing young people amid what he described as growing “spiritual poverty” in modern society.

Speaking during an audience focused on youth ministry and evangelization, the Pope warned that many young people today experience loneliness, confusion, loss of meaning, and a lack of spiritual direction despite living in an age of constant technological connection and material abundance.

“Many young hearts are hungry for truth, hope, and authentic love,” Pope Leo XIV said. “The Church cannot remain distant from this hunger.”

The Pope encouraged Catholic communities, families, schools, and clergy to accompany young people with patience, listening, and personal witness rather than judgment or indifference. He stressed that evangelization must begin with authentic relationships and credible examples of Christian life.

Addressing pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV also warned against reducing youth ministry to entertainment or superficial outreach. Instead, he called for deeper spiritual formation rooted in prayer, service, the Eucharist, and care for the vulnerable.

Observers noted that concern for younger generations has become a recurring theme throughout Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate. He has repeatedly emphasized the dangers of isolation, consumerism, and cultural fragmentation while encouraging the Church to become a place where young people encounter meaning, belonging, and hope.

The Pope concluded by urging Catholics not to underestimate the spiritual potential of youth, describing young people not as “a problem to manage,” but as “a generation capable of renewing the world through faith, courage, and compᴀssion.”
