When Gwen and Scott Hartley learned that their daughter Claire had a rare form of microcephaly, they were given very little certainty about her future.

Claire was diagnosed at just three months old, and doctors warned that they could not be sure she would reach her first birthday. 💔

But her parents chose to focus on something much more important:

making every day with their daughter count. 💗

🌷👧 TWO SISTERS, TWO BEAUTIFUL PERSONALITIES
Claire eventually reached her first birthday — and kept growing.

Years later, when Gwen became pregnant again, doctors discovered that her second daughter, Lola, also had microcephaly before she was born.

Once again, the family chose to welcome their baby girl with love.

Today, Claire is 14 and Lola is 9. Neither girl can walk or speak, and both may experience seizures, but their mother says they communicate through sounds, eye contact and the unique bond they share with their family. 🥹💕

And just like any other sisters, they have their own personalities.

Claire is gentle, while Lola has a fiery spirit and loves being cuddled. They enjoy listening to music and watching television, and each has her own way of expressing joy. 🎶📺🌈

💙🙏 THEY ARE MORE THAN A DIAGNOSIS
Their family has built a community where the girls are known, loved and accepted.

Their older brother, Cal, is incredibly proud of his sisters, while their parents continue to cherish every day they have together.

Gwen says the girls have taught their family to appreciate the present rather than constantly fear the future.

Their lives may look different from what doctors once imagined, but they are still lives filled with love, personality, connection and precious moments. 🌷💗

And perhaps that is the most beautiful lesson from Claire and Lola’s story:
