💔 FORMER TEAM USA TRIATHLETE AND FATHER OF TWO DIES DURING FAMILY VACATION ON SHELTER ISLAND

A former Team USA triathlete and devoted father of two has died after entering the water for a morning swim during a family vacation on Shelter Island, New York.

Spencer Korwin, 38, of Manhattan, had been staying at The Pridwin H๏τel with his wife and their two young daughters when he crossed the street and entered Shelter Island Sound shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday.

What began as an ordinary morning quickly turned into a desperate search.

When Korwin failed to return from his swim, his family reported him missing. Multiple police agencies and the U.S. Coast Guard joined the search as authorities worked to locate the experienced athlete. 🚤🌊

Nearly seven hours after Korwin entered the water, the search came to a tragic end.

Just after 3 p.m., a Southold dive team located his body underwater near the H๏τel dock where he had begun his swim. 😢💔

Officials believe Korwin died as a result of an accidental drowning. However, the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Authorities said weather conditions appeared normal that morning, with no fog or other obvious environmental problems reported. Still, officials cautioned that open water can present serious hazards even when conditions appear calm, including tides, currents, and boat traffic.

Korwin was no stranger to endurance sports. He represented the United States at the 2012 Triathlon World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand, an accomplishment that reflected years of dedication and athletic achievement.

He later spent five years as a sponsored Gatorade athlete.

A 2010 graduate of Syracuse University, Korwin went on to build a career beyond compeтιтive athletics. In 2021, he founded Korwin Health & Wellness, becoming an entrepreneur in the wellness field.

But to those closest to him, his greatest role was not that of an elite athlete or businessman.

He was a husband and father.

Korwin leaves behind his wife and two daughters, 4-year-old Sadie and 1-year-old Colette. His family and friends are now facing the devastating loss of a man they described as central to so many lives.

A GoFundMe established for the family described Spencer in deeply personal terms.

“Spencer was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend,” the fundraiser states. “He was the sun around which so many of our lives orbited, and his loss is being felt deeply by everyone who knew and loved him.”

The words paint a picture of someone whose presence reached far beyond his immediate family — a person whose absence is now being felt across an entire circle of loved ones. 💔

His death also serves as a painful reminder that open water can be unpredictable, even for experienced swimmers and accomplished athletes. Conditions that appear peaceful from the shore can still involve currents, tides, and other hidden dangers.

For Spencer’s family, however, the warnings cannot lessen the pain of losing a husband and father during what was supposed to be a family vacation.

His funeral is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at Temple Israel in Manhattan, where family and friends will gather to remember his life and say goodbye.
