A five-month-old baby died after suffering catastrophic brain injuries while in the care of Thomas Morgan, who has now been sentenced to life imprisonment following his conviction for murder.

Morgan, 29, was caring for Jensen-Lee Dougal at a home in Swansea on March 30, 2024, while the baby’s mother, Jordan Dougal, was at work.

A court heard that earlier that day, Morgan had been involved in an argument with his former partner, Georgia Griffiths. Prosecutors said the confrontation left Morgan “full of rage” and that he remained angry and aggressive later in the day.

It was during this period that Jensen-Lee suffered the injuries that ultimately ended his life.

According to the evidence presented during the trial, Morgan violently shook the infant. The baby sustained catastrophic brain damage along with multiple other injuries.

Morgan later contacted Jordan Dougal and told her that her son was choking and had stopped breathing.

Emergency help was sought, and Jensen-Lee was rushed to hospital. Medical professionals determined that the brain injury he had suffered was devastating.

Despite efforts to treat him, there was no realistic prospect of recovery. Life support was withdrawn the following day, and Jensen-Lee died.

The loss left his mother and family facing an unimaginable tragedy. A baby who had been only five months old would never have the opportunity to grow up, reach childhood milestones, or experience the ordinary moments of life that his family had expected to share with him. 💔🕊️

During the case, Morgan maintained that Jensen-Lee had suddenly become unwell and that he had attempted to save the child.

However, the jury rejected his account and found him guilty of murder as well as causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mrs Justice Stacey sentenced Morgan to life imprisonment and ordered that he serve a minimum term of 19 years before he can be considered for release.

In sentencing, the judge said the precise sequence of events could not be established with complete certainty because Morgan had lied about what had happened.

However, the judge emphasized that the medical evidence established that Jensen-Lee had been violently shaken.

The evidence concerning Morgan’s state of mind and the events earlier that day formed an important part of the prosecution case. The court heard how the argument with Griffiths preceded the period in which Morgan was alone caring for the infant.

The case also highlighted the devastating consequences that can follow when a vulnerable baby suffers severe physical trauma.

For Jensen-Lee’s family, the legal proceedings could not undo the loss. His mother had left her son while she went to work, expecting to return to her baby. Instead, she was confronted with a medical emergency that would ultimately end in profound grief.

The court’s findings established that Jensen-Lee’s injuries were not the result of the sudden unexplained illness described by Morgan, but were consistent with violent shaking.

His death has left a lasting wound for those who loved him, while Morgan’s conviction means he will spend many years behind bars.
