Two 11-year-old boys were enjoying a day together near Axson, Georgia, when an ordinary ride on a four-wheeler suddenly turned into a terrifying struggle.

Banner and his best friend Karson had been riding when the four-wheeler broke down. According to Banner’s mother, Jessica, her son loves anything with a motor, so he naturally got off the vehicle and began trying to figure out what had gone wrong.

Then three dogs appeared across an open field.

Jessica says the dogs ran toward the boys. Banner and Karson climbed onto the four-wheeler, apparently trying to get out of reach.

But they couldn’t get away.

According to Jessica, one of the dogs grabbed Banner by the ankle and pulled him from the vehicle. The other two dogs then joined the attack.

In that frightening moment, two children were suddenly forced to fight for their safety.

Banner had little to defend himself with—only a pair of pliers in his hands. Jessica says he managed to grab one of the dogs and hold it down while trying to protect himself from the others.

And then there was Karson.

He could have run.

He was only 11.

Instead, Jessica says Karson stayed beside his best friend. He screamed for help, threw whatever objects he could find and did everything he could to make the dogs move away from Banner.

For Jessica, that decision is something she says she will never forget.

“I’ll spend the rest of my life being grateful you were beside my boy today. You’re my hero too, kid.” ❤️

Banner was eventually taken to the hospital with serious wounds to both legs. Doctors spent approximately 3½ hours in surgery, closing 17 wounds.

While Banner was being treated, his mother was more than 2,000 miles away in Utah.

Jessica says the phone call began with words that instantly changed everything: “Jessica, I’m so sorry, but Banner was attacked and he’s hurt bad.”

Imagine being thousands of miles away while your 11-year-old is being rushed into surgery, unable to physically reach him.

Even during the frightening journey to the hospital, Banner called his mother from the ambulance. Jessica says that despite what he had just experienced, he was already thinking about football.

One of his concerns was making sure his coach knew he would not be able to finish the season.

He also wanted his dad to find his Crocs, which he had lost during the incident.

Those small details gave his family a glimpse of the boy they knew—still thinking about football, his shoes and the people around him even after such a frightening experience.

Today, there is finally some relief.

Banner is out of the hospital.

Jessica says he is talking, joking around and “just being Banner” as he begins the long process of healing.

Meanwhile, the Atkinson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what happened.

WALB reported that the dogs’ owners had been served with court papers seeking to have the animals legally deemed vicious.

For Banner’s family, however, the legal process is only part of the story.

What they may remember most is the moment when Banner needed someone beside him—and Karson refused to leave.

One boy fought to protect himself.

The other fought for his best friend.

Jessica believes Karson’s courage may have helped save her son’s life.

And perhaps that is what makes this story so heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time: two children were placed in a terrifying situation, and one of them chose not to leave the other behind.
