Christian Brueckner, the man German authorities have named as a prime suspect in Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, is due back before Germany’s Federal Court of Justice on January 11, 2027.

The hearing concerns appeals against his 2024 acquittal on five unrelated serious-offence charges. Prosecutors are seeking to overturn that acquittal, and a successful appeal could lead to a retrial, potentially as early as spring 2027.

Why does that matter for the Madeleine investigation? Brueckner has not been charged in Madeleine’s disappearance, so an appeal or retrial in the separate case would not itself establish what happened to her.
