❤️🙏 HE WEIGHED JUST 1 LB 6 OZ AT BIRTH — FOUR YEARS LATER, RIDGE IS LEARNING, GROWING, AND SHOWING THE WORLD WHAT HOPE LOOKS LIKE 🌈🥹

Four years ago, Ashton Cook and her husband, Hunter, weren’t thinking about preschool, milestones, or what their newborn son might one day become.

They were simply praying that he would survive. 💔🙏

Little Ridge entered the world at just 25 weeks, weighing only 1 pound, 6 ounces.

His arrival came suddenly and unexpectedly.

Ashton had gone to Southeast Health in Dothan, Alabama, because of pain around her rib cage. Doctors discovered that her blood pressure was dangerously high and quickly realized that an emergency C-section was necessary.

There was no time to wait.

Ashton went into surgery before her husband or mother could even arrive.

When she woke up, her tiny baby was already being cared for somewhere else.

Ridge was alive — but critically ill.

He needed specialized care and was transported to Birmingham while Ashton remained hospitalized in Dothan for six days recovering from her own medical emergency. 🏥💔

She couldn’t hold her newborn.

She couldn’t see him.

All she could do was watch her husband’s location on Life360 as he drove toward Birmingham, desperately hoping he would reach their son safely.

For a mother who had just given birth, those miles must have felt endless. 😢

Then began a journey that would last approximately nine months in the NICU.

Ridge faced one frightening challenge after another, including brain bleeds, a serious CPAP emergency, NEC, liver problems, and severe pulmonary hypertension.

There were moments when doctors had difficult conversations with his parents about how limited their options might be.

But Ridge kept fighting. ❤️🙏

And his medical teams at UAB Women & Infants Center and Children’s of Alabama fought alongside him.

The Ronald McDonald House also became an important source of support, allowing Ashton and Hunter to remain close to their critically ill son while still trying to care for their daughter, Hadley, back home.

After nearly nine months, the day they had been praying for finally came.

Ridge went home. 🏡🥹❤️

But coming home didn’t mean the medical journey was over.

He needed oxygen and a G-tube. His parents suddenly had to learn how to manage medications, medical equipment, feeding challenges, and countless appointments.

Ridge remained on oxygen for almost two years.

Even today, he still uses his G-tube for medications and when illness makes eating difficult.

But slowly, beautifully, he kept growing stronger. 🌈

Today, Ridge is 4 years old and nearly 36 pounds.

He is happy, playful, curious, and learning something new every day. 🥹💗

Ridge is autistic and nonverbal and lives with additional medical and developmental challenges, including eosinophilic esophagitis, dysphagia, and significant feeding difficulties.

For his family, however, progress isn’t measured only by the milestones other people might expect.

It’s measured in tiny victories.

✨ A new sound.

🥄 Trying a new bite of food.

💬 Finding another way to communicate.

❤️ Sitting at the table a little longer.

🌈 Learning something new.

What might look like a small moment to someone else can feel enormous to Ridge’s family.

And now, they are celebrating something they once could only dream about:

His family is learning colors, numbers, and letters while discovering the ways their little boy learns best.

There are still difficult days.

There are still medical appointments, therapies, feeding struggles, and challenges that require patience and strength.

But there is also faith. 🙏

Ashton believes the miracles weren’t only in the moments when Ridge’s life was hanging in the balance.

They were also in the people who appeared along the way.

In the medical teams who refused to give up.

In the community that supported their family.

And in every milestone they once feared they might never see. ❤️

Sometimes, a miracle is a 1-pound baby making it through another night.

And sometimes, four years later, that same child is sitting at a little table, learning his colors. 🥹🌈

Ridge’s story is a reminder that a diagnosis does not define a child.

A difficult beginning does not determine the ending.

And uncertainty about the future does not mean there won’t be a beautiful future waiting ahead. 💗

Four years ago, Ashton and Hunter were simply praying for the chance to discover who their son would become.
