Because the twins shared brain tissue and vital veins, separating them carried an enormous risk to both children’s lives.

Using detailed CT and MRI scans, surgeons created a digital model of the twins’ shared anatomy and practiced the complicated procedure inside a virtual operating room — allowing specialists on two continents to plan every step before entering the real operating room.

Both boys survived.
