💔 They Judged Her by Her Face. Mui Thomas Chose to Show the World Who She Really Was.

For much of her childhood, Mui Thomas learned a painful lesson far earlier than most children do: people often make judgments before they take the time to understand the person standing in front of them.

Born in Hong Kong with the extremely rare skin condition harlequin ichthyosis, Mui grew up facing challenges that extended far beyond medical treatment. Her appearance drew stares, questions and cruel comments. Bullying and prejudice became part of a childhood in which simply walking into a room could make her feel as though everyone was looking at her.

But Mui’s story did not end with the way other people saw her.

A turning point came when she was adopted by Roger and Tina Thomas, who gave her something that every child deserves—a family that saw beyond her condition and believed in the person she could become. Their love and support helped Mui develop the confidence to build a life defined not by her appearance, but by her ambitions, personality and determination. ❤️🙏

As she grew older, Mui found a pᴀssion in a place where strength, discipline and courage matter more than appearances: rugby.

Rather than allowing ᴀssumptions about her condition to determine what she could or could not do, she pursued the sport and eventually became a rugby referee. 🏉👏

On the rugby field, the focus was not on her skin. It was on her decisions, her knowledge of the game and her ability to perform her role.

And increasingly, Mui began using her own experiences to speak about something much larger than sport.

Through “The Girl Behind The Face,” she has shared her experiences with bullying, prejudice and living with a visible difference. Her message is not simply about asking people to be more accepting.
