💔 SHE WENT TO SOFT PLAY FOR AN ORDINARY AFTERNOON OF FUN — THEN HER FAMILY NOTICED A CHANGE THAT WOULD ALTER HER CHILDHOOD FOREVER 🦄

For most parents, taking a young child to a soft play centre means little more than laughter, climbing, running around and eventually going home with a tired, happy child.

For Amelia Russell, however, one ordinary afternoon with her daughter Lillie became the beginning of a medical journey that would continue for years.

Lillie was just four years old when she was playing near the bottom of a slide and another child came down behind her, colliding with her.

At first, the incident did not appear to be catastrophic.

Remarkably, Lillie reportedly got back up and continued playing.

But later, everything changed when her family noticed her back.

Amelia was reportedly alerted that Lillie might have seriously injured herself. Although the little girl was not complaining of severe pain, her parents immediately realised something was not right.

They took her to A&E, hoping doctors would discover a straightforward injury that could be treated quickly.

Instead, that visit marked the beginning of a long and frightening journey.

🏥 A Curve That Kept Progressing

According to Lillie’s family, she subsequently developed what was described as accident-induced scoliosis.

Scoliosis involves an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. In Lillie’s case, the curvature became increasingly severe.

What initially measured around 55 degrees eventually progressed to almost 70 degrees.

For her parents, those numbers were far more than medical measurements. Each new scan represented another indication that their daughter’s spine was continuing to curve despite attempts to manage the condition.

The diagnosis was eventually confirmed in the summer of 2023.

Doctors began exploring ways to improve the curvature without immediately turning to the more extensive surgery that Lillie might eventually need.

She underwent three spinal stretching procedures under general anaesthetic, with approximately three months between each procedure.

For a young child, each hospital admission represented another major disruption to ordinary childhood.

For Amelia and her husband Dan, it meant repeatedly watching their daughter undergo medical procedures while hoping the next one would finally bring better news.

💔 When Treatment Did Not Go as Planned

After the third procedure, the family received devastating news.

The treatment was not producing the correction they had hoped for, and Amelia says Lillie’s muscles were beginning to waste.

Instead of seeing the curve improve, her parents were watching it continue to progress.

Lillie was also required to wear a back brace for much of the day.

Today, she reportedly wears the brace for approximately 22 hours every day.

For most children, clothing and daily routines are barely noticed. For Lillie, the brace has become a constant part of her life — during both waking hours and sleep.

🦄 A Little Girl Finding Her Own Strength

Lillie is now seven years old.

At an age when many children are simply focused on school, friends, games and their favourite toys, she has already developed an awareness that her body is different from those of some of her classmates.

Her mother says Lillie refers to herself as having a “special back.”

The phrase reflects the innocent way children can describe complicated circumstances. Rather than defining herself by hospital appointments or medical treatment, Lillie has found simple words to explain something that has become part of her childhood.

And despite everything, she remains a cheerful little girl.

Her mother describes her as girly, happy and full of personality. She loves unicorns and continues to find joy in the things that make her feel like any other child. 🦄🌈

For Amelia and Dan, however, watching their daughter navigate such a demanding routine remains incredibly difficult.

The family knows the journey may not be over. Further treatment, including potentially more extensive surgery, could still be part of Lillie’s future.

But amid the hospital visits, procedures, braces and uncertainty, one thing continues to stand out: Lillie’s determination.

What began with a simple afternoon at a soft play centre has become a story of resilience, family love and a little girl learning to live with a condition that has shaped her childhood.

At just four years old, Lillie could not have understood what that collision might mean.

Today, at seven, she calls her difference her “special back.”
