‼️ He was only 14 years old, had recently stepped into a boxing gym for the second time, and was beginning to discover what his future might look like. Now, Rakeem Blair Jr.’s family and community are mourning a life that ended far too soon.

Rakeem died in the hospital over the weekend, several days after suffering a gunsH๏τ-related injury in East Price Hill on August 18.

According to family members, the teenager had been critically injured near the 3700 block of Warsaw Avenue following a reported confrontation involving a group of young people.

Police said the circumstances remain under investigation, and authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.

After the incident, Rakeem was rushed to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, where doctors worked to treat his injuries.

He remained in critical condition for several days.

Then came the heartbreaking news his family had been dreading.

Doctors determined that Rakeem was brain ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.

For the people who loved him, the medical update meant saying goodbye to a teenager they believed had so much more life ahead of him. 💔

One person who remembers those critical moments is Briona Akins, a Metro bus driver who was working nearby when she saw Rakeem on the ground.

Akins immediately stopped and attempted to provide ᴀssistance until emergency responders arrived.

“He was still taking breaths,” she recalled.

“He was still trying to keep his eyes open.”

Akins said she simply hoped that whatever help she could provide might make a difference.

Her actions became one of the many human moments surrounding a tragedy that has deeply affected the East Price Hill community.

Rakeem’s family now wants people to remember not only how his life ended, but how he lived.

His aunt, Khalilah Starks, described him as a loving, energetic, funny young man with a big personality.

She said Rakeem was the youngest of his mother’s children, yet he often behaved with a maturity beyond his years.

He looked after his mother and cared deeply about his family.

Starks also remembered him as intelligent, determined, and naturally confident — someone who could become a leader among his peers.

🥊 Boxing had recently become part of his journey.

Family members said Rakeem had attended his second practice at Lord’s Gym in East Price Hill shortly before the tragedy.

For the young athletes training alongside him, the news was difficult to comprehend.

Fellow youth boxer Dorian Cody said he had just spent time with Rakeem and never imagined that something so devastating could happen.

Another young boxer, Kahji Carter, said he was simply shocked when he realized the news was real.

For these young athletes, the boxing gym was supposed to be a place to learn discipline, build confidence, and dream about the future.

Instead, they are now remembering one of their own.

Rakeem’s family, friends, fellow athletes, and community members are left with memories of a teenager who was funny, caring, energetic, intelligent, and full of potential. 🤍
