Four-month-old Arriella Andrews is facing an extraordinary battle after being born with a rare condition that left her without a functioning immune system. Now, her family is desperately hoping to find a matching bone marrow donor who could give their little girl the chance to grow up healthier. 🥹💗

Arriella, from Nottinghamshire, England, was born with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), an extremely rare inherited condition sometimes known as “bubble baby syndrome.” SCID affects roughly one in every 300,000 babies and leaves the body unable to properly defend itself against many infections. 🦠❤️‍🩹

Born on January 7, Arriella initially appeared to be a healthy newborn. But everything changed when she developed a persistent cough and began struggling to breathe.

Her mother, Cᴀssidy, became so concerned that she called an ambulance and rushed her daughter to the hospital. Over the next three weeks, Arriella was treated for multiple respiratory infections and pneumonia before doctors finally discovered the underlying condition.

Once SCID was diagnosed, Arriella was moved into a specially protected hospital environment and given medication to help protect her from infections her immune system could not fight on its own. 🏥🧸

For the first eight days, Cᴀssidy had to wear protective clothing, gloves, and a face mask whenever she was near her daughter. Even the simplest expressions of affection became difficult.

Cᴀssidy could not kiss her baby because ordinary germs that might be harmless to most people could pose a serious danger to Arriella. 💔

Despite the difficult circumstances, Arriella has continued to show remarkable strength. Her mother affectionately calls her “the girl in the greenhouse” as she remains in a carefully protected environment while waiting for a suitable donor.

She is currently receiving care at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, where doctors are searching for the bone marrow match she needs before she can undergo a transplant. 🏥💗

For Cᴀssidy, watching her daughter spend so much of her young life surrounded by medical equipment has been heartbreaking.

“Seeing Arriella like this is heartbreaking,” she said. “She is surrounded by wires and tubes, and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever witnessed.”

She described the experience as one of the most difficult things a parent could face, saying there are days when she feels helpless as she sits beside her daughter.

“For the first eight days after she was born, I had to wear a mask, gloves and protective clothing just to be near her. I couldn’t kiss her. I couldn’t even comfort her with a simple touch.”

When Arriella was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital, she was placed in a specially protected room to reduce her exposure to germs. 🧸❤️‍🩹

Cᴀssidy never imagined that her daughter would face such an extraordinary medical challenge.

“When I became pregnant last May, I never imagined my daughter would face something like this,” she said. “But she has shown incredible strength. She is so brave, and I will keep fighting right beside her.”

Although Arriella’s parents are divorced, her father continues to visit his daughter regularly. Both parents have also undergone blood tests as doctors work to identify the most suitable donor match. 👨‍👩‍👧💗

Cᴀssidy herself has been registered as a bone marrow donor since she was 18. She previously believed donations were primarily intended for people with leukemia, but Arriella’s diagnosis taught her just how many lives donor registries can potentially help.

A successful bone marrow transplant could give Arriella a functioning immune system and open the door to a much more normal childhood. 🌈🩷
