Tiny Paranthropus, Only About 1 Meter Tall, Found in South Africa: The “Nutcracker Man” Who Walked Perfectly on Two Legs Like Modern Humans
In March 2025, a groundbreaking discovery from the Swartkrans Cave (Cradle of Humankind, South Africa) changed how we understand Paranthropus robustus – the famous “Nutcracker Man” with its enormous teeth. For the first time, scientists obtained a complete articulated lower limb skeleton (hip – thigh – tibia) belonging to a single individual.
The specimen, SWT1/HR-2, belonged to a young adult, most likely female, and is estimated to be about 2 million years old. Its estimated height is only about 1 meter (approximately 100 cm) and its weight is only about 27 kg – smaller than both “Lucy” (Australopithecus afarensis) and “Hobbit” (Homo floresiensis). This is the smallest known specimen of P. robustus.
Most importantly: the lower limb structure shows perfect bipedal movement, an upright gait identical to that of modern humans. The tibia shows signs of foot arches, and the hip and thigh joints oriented for an upright gait. This species was no longer primarily a climber, but rather an upright walker on the ground, although it may have retained some climbing abilities.

This discovery, published in the Journal of Human Evolution by an international research team led by Travis Pickering (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Marine Cazenave, confirms P. robustus as a specialized bipedal species and reveals significant Sєxual dimorphism—males were much larger than females.
As of June 2026, this specimen is on display and undergoing further study in South Africa. It strongly reinforces the image of Paranthropus not only as a “nut-eating” species but also as a small, vulnerable bipedal animal that had perfected upright gait very early on.
South Africa continues to unveil secrets about a diverse and complex hominin world 2 million years ago — where these tiny “mouth-breaking humans” coexisted with their Homo ancestors.
