🌿⚠️ HE WAS JUST HELPING CLEAR THE YARD — THEN A COMMON WEED SENT 7-YEAR-OLD RAYDEN TO THE HOSPITAL 🥺💙

What started as an ordinary afternoon of helping his family with yard work quickly became a terrifying medical emergency for 7-year-old Rayden Vollrath.

Rayden was helping clear overgrown weeds along his family’s backyard fence in Illinois. Wearing shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, he pulled up a plant with clusters of purple berries.

It was pokeweed — a plant his family didn’t realize could cause such a serious reaction.

His mother, Danielle Carnicelli, believes sap from the plant got onto or underneath Rayden’s fingernails. Later, when he scratched his face, the exposure may have spread to his skin.

Within hours, everything changed.

Rayden’s skin began burning, itching, and swelling. The reaction continued to worsen, and soon he was struggling to breathe.

“It hurt. A lot. My chest was burning and I couldn’t breathe,” Rayden later recalled. 💔

His father, Matthew Vollrath, rushed him to the emergency room.

Doctors worked to determine exactly what was happening as Rayden’s swelling became increasingly severe. His mother described the experience as deeply traumatic, especially as her son struggled through the pain during the night.

After spending two days in the hospital, doctors determined that Rayden had suffered a severe allergic reaction to pokeweed. His family was sent home with an EpiPen and multiple medications to help manage his symptoms.

Thankfully, Rayden began to recover.

But the frightening experience left his family with a message they desperately want other parents to hear.

Pokeweed can look like an ordinary backyard plant, especially when its purple berries appear. Yet the plant is toxic, and contact with its sap can cause serious skin irritation and blistering. Ingesting parts of the plant can be even more dangerous.

Rayden has already learned his own lesson.

The next time he helps with yard work, he says he’ll wear long sleeves, long pants, boots, and gloves. 🥺🧤

His mother hopes other families will take a moment to identify unfamiliar plants before letting children handle them.

Because sometimes, something that looks like just another weed growing beside a fence can turn into an emergency no parent ever expects.
