The ordinary looking house on a quiet street in rural Hamden Ohio became the center of one of the most disturbing child neglect cases in recent American history when officers arrived on June 30 to serve a warrant for an unrelated investigation and instead uncovered a nightmare that left investigators and the public reeling. Inside the roughly 1850 square foot five bedroom one bathroom home 16 children ranging from toddlers to an 18 year old had been living for years in conditions so extreme that authorities compared them to third world squalor and stated that local livestock enjoyed better living standards.

The front room was buried under mountains of trash with discarded boxes moldy clothes and crumpled plastic containers strewn across floors that reeked of cat urine while a single Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey Party Bucket sat among the debris next to a bizarre framed tiger painting and a stained chest freezer as the once white walls had faded to a dingy gray. Down in the basement a dining room chair and a bicycle wheel were the only recognizable objects protruding from a gigantic trash heap that filled half the space and outside the property more debris piles surrounded the home where a small broken bicycle and a copy of the children’s book Jonathan James and the Whatif Monster offered the only faint signs that children had ever been present.

Two dilapidated vehicles a silver sedan and a blue Chevy pickup remained parked nearby their interiors coated with cigarette ʙuттs candy wrappers and garbage while police tape still circled the property more than a week later. The 16 victims mostly confined to a cramped 12 by 12 foot room for at least four years had never been enrolled in school and many could barely communicate with some completely unable to speak as the oldest an 18 year old developmentally disabled girl could not even write her own name. After the rescue the children were rushed to hospitals across Ohio where several were listed in serious condition including two airlifted to trauma centers and at least one who required intubation amid reports of high levels of bacterial matter human feces and insect coverage. Grandparents Gary Siders Sr 73 and Christina Lynn Siders 67 along with their son Gary Bub Siders Jr 36 and his wife Elizabeth Siders 33 were each charged with 16 counts of felony child endangerment as the younger couple is believed to be the biological parents of every child. Elizabeth had married Gary Jr when she was only 15 and he was 18 in 2008 with their first child born just two months later and state records show she later gave birth to conjoined twins who died of natural causes hours after delivery.
