WHEN A ROUTINE ULTRASOUND CHANGED EVERYTHING — DAISY’S JOURNEY WITH APERT SYNDROME

At just 25 weeks into her pregnancy, Queensland mum Debb Stevens received news she never expected. An ultrasound revealed that her unborn baby had Apert syndrome, a rare genetic condition that can affect the development of the skull, face, hands and feet.

For Debb and her husband, Caine, the diagnosis was overwhelming. They had never heard of Apert syndrome before, and suddenly they were facing a future filled with unfamiliar medical terms, difficult decisions and uncertainty about what life would look like for their daughter.

“We had never heard of it,” Debb recalled. The couple gave themselves a week to process the diagnosis and learn more about the condition. They looked at pH๏τographs online, trying to understand what their little girl might experience.

But the information quickly became too much.

Rather than spending every day searching the internet and imagining the worst, Debb and Caine decided to step away from the online world for a while. They focused instead on preparing to welcome their daughter and taking everything one step at a time.

Their daughter Daisy would eventually face an extraordinary medical journey. She required complex reconstruction involving her skull and face and underwent more than 20 surgeries before the age of five.

For her parents, each procedure brought another round of uncertainty, recovery and hope. What began with a shocking prenatal diagnosis became a long journey of learning how to advocate for their child while helping Daisy grow up surrounded by love rather than defined by a medical label.

Apert syndrome is rare, and its effects can vary significantly from one person to another. Children may require treatment from multiple specialists throughout childhood, often involving several stages of surgery and ongoing medical care.

Looking back at that first ultrasound, the fear and confusion Debb experienced are understandable. They were not simply receiving a diagnosis — they were being introduced to an entirely different future than the one they had imagined.

And yet, Daisy’s story is ultimately about much more than the surgeries she endured.

It is about a little girl growing up with a family determined to stand beside her through every difficult chapter — and parents who, after the initial shock, chose to focus on their daughter rather than the frightening possibilities they found online.
