Samir Naili, 35, and his 8-year-old daughter, Kashmira, were reportedly traveling together in North Reading when their routine journey suddenly turned into a devastating incident.

According to prosecutors, the father and daughter were stopped at a red light on Route 28 when an Acura MDX driven by 21-year-old Matthew Sweeney came into their Honda at a high rate of speed.

The collision was followed by a fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle.

Despite efforts by people at the scene, Samir and Kashmira could not be saved.

For their loved ones, the tragedy has left behind an overwhelming sense of loss. Kashmira was only eight years old — a child whose life should have included years of school, friendships, family celebrations and dreams about the future.

Instead, her family is now left remembering a little girl who went out for an ordinary errand with her father and never returned home.

The legal case surrounding the incident is now moving through the courts.

Sweeney has pleaded not guilty to charges including motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence and speeding.

Prosecutors have alleged that officers observed signs of possible alcohol impairment following the incident, including an odor of alcohol, bloodsH๏τ and glossy eyes and slurred speech. Investigators also reportedly found open alcohol containers inside the vehicle.

Sweeney’s defense has presented another part of the story. His attorney says he has bipolar disorder, a history of blackouts and episodes described as “lost time,” and that he does not remember the incident.

Those claims will be considered as the legal process continues, and the allegations against Sweeney have not been proven in court.
