In the carefully curated world of social media, Jamie Varley presented himself as the ultimate family man, a respected secondary school teacher and designated safeguarding lead at South Shore Academy in Blackpool whose every post radiated warmth, stability and devotion. Smiling pH๏τographs filled his Instagram feed daily, showing an immaculate home, a loving partnership with John McGowan-Fazakerley, their dog Maximus, career successes and, after April 2023, the joyful arrival of their adopted son Preston Davey. They hosted a “Chosen Shower” complete with cake, decorations and a balloon arch, painted a living-room mural bearing the name Preston Elijah, and shared moments that convinced followers and professionals alike that this was a dream household built on love and careful planning. The couple had met on Canal Street in Manchester’s Gay Village in late 2018, decided early that they wanted a family, began the adoption process in December 2021 and received approval in January 2023. Varley even arranged to take a year off work so he could be the primary carer. To the outside world everything looked Instagram-ready and respectable.

Behind that polished veneer, however, lay a reality so dark that detectives later described it as entirely different from the image projected. Preston, born on 16 June 2022 and taken into care at five days old because his biological mother Sarah Davey had a long criminal history that included a conviction at age fourteen for the murder of a frail pensioner, was placed with the couple at nine months. Within weeks the baby began presenting with non-accidental injuries. He was hospitalised three times before his death: once for a nosebleed and seizure, once for a rash and bruising, and once for a fractured left elbow. Messages Varley sent revealed mounting frustration with sleepless nights and what he called “post-adoption depression,” yet the professional reᴀssurances he offered social workers and medical staff kept concerns at bay. On 27 July 2023 Varley rushed the thirteen-month-old to Blackpool Victoria Hospital claiming he had left the child in the bath for two or three minutes and returned to find him submerged. Medics worked for nearly an hour but could not revive him. The toddler was dry, there was no evidence of swallowed water, and a post-mortem examination revealed forty external and internal traumatic injuries, some consistent with forcible penetration and Sєxual abuse. Drowning was ruled out; the cause of death was acute upper-airways obstruction from smothering during a Sєxual ᴀssault.

An eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court exposed the full extent of the deception. Varley was convicted of murder, two counts of ᴀssault by penetration, five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, Sєxual ᴀssault of a child and multiple offences involving indecent images. His partner McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty and Sєxual ᴀssault. Sentencing judge Mr Justice Turner told Varley the case was of the most extreme gravity and imposed a whole-life order, meaning the thirty-seven-year-old teacher will never be released except in the most exceptional compᴀssionate circumstances. McGowan-Fazakerley received twenty-five years. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows summarised the contrast that shocked the nation: the pair had tried to present the perfect family living the perfect life, but once the veneer was scraped away the truth was far more sinister. Varley, described as a serial manipulator and liar who showed no genuine remorse, had used his professional status and charm to conceal months of physical, Sєxual and emotional abuse of a child who never stood a fair chance. The pH๏τographs that once drew admiration now stand as evidence of how thoroughly darkness can hide behind a carefully filtered smile.
