Human remains have been found in the Goulburn River, six weeks after Victorian tradie Shane Wilson disappeared while fishing from his kayak.

The remains were found in the river at Ghin Ghin, near Ghin Ghin Road, on Sunday, and they have yet to be formally identified.

But police believe they belong to Wilson, 53, whose disappearance sparked a major search after he fell overboard on July 18.

The discovery comes after Wilson’s family told nine.com.au they were desperate to bring him home, with his sister Melissa Teague pleading for the search to continue after authorities suspended their efforts.

Wilson had been fishing at one of his favourite spots when his friend Paul “heard Shane yell, followed by a splash”, Teague said.

His kayak and paddle were recovered soon after he disappeared, but extensive searches involving Victoria Police, the Country Fire Authority, Lifesaving Victoria and the State Emergency Service found nothing.

Police later suspended the search, which left his family devastated.

“We don’t understand how the search can just stop while Shane is still missing,” Teague previously told nine.com.au.

“We don’t have a body, we don’t have answers, we don’t have closure.

“The thought that he could still be down there, alone at the bottom of that river, while the search has stopped is absolutely heartbreaking.”

Teague had urged people living near the river to check their properties and asked anyone using the area to keep an eye out for her brother.

“I just want people to understand that this isn’t over for us,” she said.

“Shane hasn’t been found, we want my brother home.”

An SES spokesperson previously said Wilson was a strong swimmer but wasn’t wearing a life jacket when he went overboard, and the river was flowing rapidly at the time.
