PALEONTOLOGY MARVEL: Zavacephale rinpoche – The World’s Oldest Dome-Headed Dinosaur Unearthed in Mongolia!

In a stunning revelation that rewrites pachycephalosaur history, scientists have unveiled Zavacephale rinpoche, the oldest and most complete dome-headed dinosaur ever found. This 108-million-year-old juvenile from Mongolia’s Gobi Desert boasts a fully formed cranial dome—proving these bizarre “head-ʙuттing” dinosaurs evolved their signature feature far earlier than previously thought.

Unearthed in the Early Cretaceous Khuren Dukh Formation, the partial articulated skeleton includes a near-perfect skull, vertebrae, ribs, limbs, and even the first known manual bones and gastroliths for the group. Led by Dr. Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig and colleagues, the find was formally described in Nature (September 2025). At roughly 1.5–2 meters long, this small herbivore predates all other pachycephalosaurs by about 15 million years. Yet its well-developed frontoparietal dome already rivals those of much later, larger species.
