Father Speaks Out as Court Hears Case in Death of 4-Year-Old Aniya Day-Garrett

A courtroom in Ohio became the setting for an emotional hearing as legal proceedings continued in the case surrounding the death of four-year-old Aniya Day-Garrett, a tragedy that has deeply affected her family and community.

Aniya’s father, Mickhal Garrett, attended the hearing alongside relatives as Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis appeared before the court. Both have been charged with aggravated murder in connection with the child’s death. The defendants have the right to contest the allegations, and the case remains ongoing.

During the hearing, emotions ran high. As deputies prepared to escort the defendants from the courtroom, Garrett became overwhelmed with grief, shouting, “You killed my child! You hurt my baby!” His emotional reaction reflected the profound pain of a father mourning the loss of his daughter. Moments later, he collapsed and was ᴀssisted by family members.

According to investigators, emergency responders were called to an apartment in Euclid, Ohio, after Aniya was found unresponsive. She was transported to a hospital, where medical staff worked to save her life. Despite those efforts, she later died from her injuries.

Medical evaluations concluded that Aniya had suffered a stroke caused by repeated blunt force injuries to the head. The medical examiner ultimately ruled her death a homicide. Authorities also reported concerns regarding malnourishment and evidence of prolonged abuse, findings that became central to the criminal investigation.

Following the investigation, prosecutors charged Sierra Day and Deonte Lewis with aggravated murder and related offenses. The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and the defendants remain enтιтled to a fair trial.

Court records indicate that Aniya’s father had previously expressed concerns about his daughter’s well-being and had sought custody. Family members also reportedly noticed injuries that raised concerns before the child’s death, prompting renewed discussion about the importance of recognizing and responding to warning signs of child abuse.

As the legal process continues, the case has sparked broader conversations about child protection, early intervention, and the responsibility of agencies and communities to respond when a child’s safety may be at risk.

For Mickhal Garrett, however, the proceedings remain deeply personal. While the court determines legal responsibility, he continues to grieve the loss of the daughter he says should have had the chance to grow up.

Aniya Day-Garrett’s case remains one of the most heartbreaking child abuse investigations in recent years, serving as a reminder of the devastating consequences when vulnerable children are not protected in time.
