Community Honors One-Year-Old Kohen Wiley as Investigation Continues

Family members, friends, and community members recently gathered to honor the life of one-year-old Kohen Wiley, whose death during a police-involved shooting has left his loved ones grieving and awaiting answers.
Nearly two weeks after the tragic incident, those closest to Kohen came together to celebrate his short but meaningful life. What should have been a time filled with childhood milestones instead became a day of remembrance for a little boy whose life ended far too soon.
Loved ones described Kohen as a joyful child who brought happiness to those around him. Though he was only one year old, they said his smile, laughter, and presence made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

The funeral service brought together relatives, neighbors, friends, and supporters, many of whom offered prayers, shared memories, and expressed their support for the Wiley family during an unimaginably difficult time.
The incident that claimed Kohen’s life occurred in Senatobia, Mississippi, during a police response to a reported shoplifting call. According to authorities, officers encountered a vehicle in a Walmart parking lot that they said moved toward law enforcement personnel, creating what officials described as a dangerous situation.
During the encounter, a Senatobia police officer fired into the vehicle. Kohen, who was inside, was fatally wounded. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry, while the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved fatal shooting.
Kohen’s family has questioned parts of the official account and has called for the public release of body-camera footage, dash-camera recordings, and surveillance video from the parking lot. They say access to the available evidence is important to better understand what occurred in the moments leading up to the shooting.
The family is being represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has also called for greater transparency during the investigation. In addition, the family has requested an independent autopsy as part of its efforts to obtain a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding Kohen’s death.
While much attention remains focused on the investigation, those attending the funeral emphasized remembering Kohen as more than the circumstances of his pᴀssing. They reflected on the joy he brought to his family and the love that surrounded him throughout his life.
Messages of sympathy and support have continued to arrive from people across Mississippi and beyond. Community members have attended vigils and gatherings, expressing solidarity with the family while urging a thorough and transparent investigation.
The case has also prompted broader discussions about police use of force involving moving vehicles and the importance of accountability in incidents that result in the loss of life. At the same time, officials have emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that no final conclusions have yet been announced.
For Kohen’s family, however, the legal process is only one part of their journey. They continue to mourn the loss of a son, grandson, and loved one whose future was just beginning.
Although the funeral marked a final farewell, it did not bring an end to the family’s search for answers. They remain hopeful that the investigation will provide a clear account of what happened and help determine whether further action is appropriate.
As the investigation moves forward, many in the community continue to remember Kohen not for the tragedy that claimed his life, but for the happiness he brought during his brief time with those who loved him. His memory remains at the center of a family’s grief and a community’s hope that the facts surrounding the case will be fully and fairly established.
