Baby injured in an airstrike faces further surgeries as family hopes for specialized medical care

Just three months after entering the world, baby Mohammad Al-Khatib has already endured extraordinary hardship.
Mohammad was seriously injured during an airstrike that also claimed the life of his mother while she was breastfeeding him. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors worked urgently to save his life.
The blast caused devastating injuries to his left leg. Despite multiple operations, surgeons were ultimately forced to perform a below-the-knee amputation to prevent further life-threatening complications.
His medical journey, however, is not over.

Mohammad also suffered severe burns and significant injuries to his left hand. According to his doctors, the damage remains serious, and they are closely monitoring his condition as they work to preserve as much function as possible. They have also warned that additional surgery on his injured leg may be necessary as he continues to recover.
Medical teams have provided all the treatment currently available to them, but they say access to more advanced surgical techniques and specialized rehabilitation services could improve his long-term outlook.
For that reason, his doctors hope he can eventually receive care at a specialist medical center with greater resources for complex reconstructive treatment.

For the relatives now caring for him, every day is a mixture of hope and uncertainty.
“He has already been through so much in such a short life,” one family member said. “We just want him to have the chance to grow up, play, and enjoy the childhood every child deserves.”
Although Mohammad’s life began with unimaginable loss, his loved ones remain focused on his future.
They continue to hope that access to specialized medical care will give him the best possible opportunity to heal, adapt, and build a life filled with hope despite everything he has endured.
