🎀💔 SHE DREAMED OF BECOMING A NEONATAL NURSE — THE HEARTBREAKING STORY OF 16-YEAR-OLD EMMA WALKER

KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE — November 21, 2016 — Emma Walker was only 16, but she already had a vision for her future.

A student at Central High School in Knoxville, Emma was a cheerleader known by those around her for her kind heart and love for children. She dreamed of eventually becoming a neonatal nurse and caring for newborn babies. 🩷

Then a teenage relationship took a deeply troubling turn.

Emma began dating William Riley Gaul, a football player at her school. According to Emma’s family and friends, the relationship became increasingly difficult as Gaul displayed controlling and jealous behavior.

Emma’s parents became concerned about the situation, including messages he sent their daughter. They eventually prohibited him from coming to their home and encouraged Emma to end the relationship.

By November 2016, Emma had ended the relationship.

According to investigators, Gaul did not accept the breakup and continued contacting her through troubling messages and other behavior.

Then came the morning of November 21.

Someone outside Emma’s Knoxville home fired two sH๏τs through the wall of her bedroom while she was lying in bed.

One struck Emma, while the other became lodged in her pillow.

Later that morning, Emma’s mother, Jill Walker, went into her daughter’s room to wake her for school.

Instead, she discovered that Emma had been fatally wounded. 💔🕊️

Investigators soon focused on Gaul, who was 18 at the time. His previous relationship with Emma and his behavior following their breakup became central to the investigation.

Friends also provided information to authorities. Investigators learned that Gaul had obtained a firearm from his grandfather, while other evidence connected him to the area around Emma’s home during the early morning hours.

Two friends eventually cooperated with investigators and ᴀssisted authorities in recovering the weapon.

Gaul was arrested on November 22, one day after Emma’s pᴀssing.

During his 2018 trial, his defense argued that he had intended to frighten Emma rather than end her life. Prosecutors disputed that explanation and argued that the circumstances demonstrated deliberate intent.

On May 8, 2018, a jury found Gaul guilty of first-degree murder and other charges.

He was sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for 51 years.

But Emma’s family has always wanted people to remember something beyond the courtroom.

Emma was not simply a headline or a case file.

She was a daughter.

A sister.

A friend.

A student.

A cheerleader.

And a young woman who loved children and dreamed of caring for newborns. 🎀👶
