A STRANGER GAVE HIM PART OF HIS LIVER — AND GAVE AN 11-YEAR-OLD BOY ANOTHER CHANCE
At just 11 years old, Ahmad had already been through more than most children could ever imagine.
He had previously received a liver transplant, giving his family hope that he could finally begin looking toward a healthier future. But that hope was shaken when serious complications caused the donated organ to begin failing.
Doctors told his family that Ahmad would need another transplant if he was going to have a chance at surviving.
And then, hundreds of miles away, someone who had never met Ahmad made an extraordinary decision.
Pastor Nathan Howe volunteered to donate part of his own liver to a stranger.
He didn’t know the child’s name. He didn’t know his family. He had no personal connection to the boy whose life could depend on his decision.
He simply knew that someone, somewhere, was desperately waiting for a donor.
For Ahmad’s family, the arrival of a living donor meant something difficult to put into words: hope when they had been facing an incredibly frightening future.
The idea that a complete stranger could be willing to undergo major surgery simply to give another person a chance at life is the kind of kindness that can stay with a family forever.
For Ahmad, this wasn’t just another medical procedure.
It was another opportunity to grow up, make memories and experience the ordinary moments of childhood that so many people take for granted.
And behind that opportunity was a man who chose to help someone he had never even met.
Sometimes the most powerful acts of kindness come from people who have absolutely nothing to gain — except the knowledge that they may have helped another human being keep going.
Nathan didn’t know Ahmad.
But he was willing to give part of himself so that this young boy could have another chance.
