Six Flags Over Georgia Reopens as Goliath Remains Closed Amid New Safety Measures

Six Flags Over Georgia has reopened to visitors, but its popular Goliath roller coaster remains closed following an October 12 incident that claimed the life of 42-year-old Hᴀssan Jihad Ibn Kariem. As investigations continue, the amusement park’s operator has announced additional safety measures, including plans to install seat belts on Goliath and certain similar roller coasters.

New Safety Measures Announced

In a statement issued October 23, Six Flags CEO John Reilly said the company was reinforcing safety procedures across its parks. Independent engineers and ride-inspection specialists have been engaged to review existing procedures and identify areas for improvement.

Goliath uses a lap-bar restraint system, and the planned seat belts would provide an additional restraint. The company has not announced a reopening date for the ride, saying it must first complete the necessary safety reviews

Investigation Into the Incident Continues

Kariem was reportedly visiting the park with family members to celebrate his niece’s birthday when he fell from the ride. Four other young riders were taken to hospitals with injuries described by authorities as non-life-threatening.

Georgia’s Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is leading the technical safety investigation, working alongside local law enforcement. Officials have said Goliath’s most recent annual inspection, conducted in March 2026, recorded no violations or deficiencies. However, investigators are continuing to examine the ride, its operation and relevant records to determine what happened.

What Happens Next?

While Goliath remains out of service, the rest of the park has resumed operations. Six Flags has also temporarily closed eight additional rides across five other parks as a precaution, with further safety work and reviews planned.

The company has not provided a firm timeline for reopening the affected attractions. For now, the focus remains on completing the investigations, reviewing the restraint systems and determining what additional measures are necessary before the rides can safely return to operation.
