Investigators Probe Online Radicalization and Extremist Ties After ᴅᴇᴀᴅly Attack at Oregon Elementary School

Authorities in Oregon continue to examine the background and digital footprint of 16-year-old Griffin J. John II in the days following the mᴀss shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. The attack, which took place on the afternoon of October 15, 2026, left three young students and a teacher ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and two others critically injured before the gunman was stopped by an armed parent.
John, a former special education student at the school, forced his way onto the campus by climbing a fence and then blasting through locked doors with a 12-gauge pump-action sH๏τgun. He entered a special education classroom where several children and staff members were present. Three boys, ages 5, 8, and 11, and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert were killed. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old educational ᴀssistant sustained critical injuries and were hospitalized.

The violence ended approximately three minutes after the first sH๏τs were fired. Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two students at the school who held a valid concealed-carry permit, saw the gunman enter the building, followed him inside, and fatally sH๏τ him. Police later recovered roughly 44 additional rounds of ammunition from John and his backpack, indicating the attack could have been far more lethal if it had continued.
In the aftermath, investigators seized electronic devices from the home of John’s mother, Shauntai Nickerson. Law-enforcement sources have told local outlets that analysts are reviewing his online activity for signs of radicalization. Reports indicate that John may have developed an intense interest in Nazi ideology in the period leading up to the shooting. Officials are also examining whether he had any contact with violent online networks, including the group known as “764,” which has been linked in other cases to the coercion and exploitation of young people. John has been described by sources familiar with the probe as highly online and socially isolated.

Nickerson spoke to reporters the day after the attack while standing outside her home. Visibly emotional, she referred to her son as “a good boy” and expressed profound regret. She apologized to the families of those who were killed and said she wished she could have done something to prevent the tragedy. The sH๏τgun used in the shooting had been purchased by her.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed the idenтιтies of the victims and the shooter during a press conference, noting that the motive remains under investigation. He praised the actions of school staff who attempted to intervene, including one teacher who tried to wrestle the weapon away and threw her cellphone in an effort to disrupt the ᴀssault. District officials confirmed that John was no longer enrolled in the Bend-La Pine Schools system at the time of the shooting.
In the days that followed, residents of Bend gathered outside the school to leave flowers, candles, stuffed animals, and messages of support. Community leaders and state officials have focused on supporting the victims’ families, the injured, and the students and staff affected by the trauma. The investigation into John’s online history, possible extremist influences, and the circumstances surrounding the attack remains active.
