🎺💔 A Young Musician’s Final Performance: Derek Phillips Remembered by Family, Friends and Fellow Hawkeyes
‼️ He arrived at the football game ready to do what he loved—perform with his fellow musicians. Just days later, his family was sharing heartbreaking news from his own Instagram account.
Derek Phillips, a University of Iowa student and member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, died after collapsing during Saturday’s football game as temperatures climbed into the 90s.
According to his family, Derek suffered sudden cardiac arrest during the game. He was rushed to the intensive care unit at the University of Iowa Hospital, where doctors worked to save his life.
For three days, his loved ones waited and hoped for a different outcome.
Instead, they were confronted with an unimaginable reality.
Derek’s family said the damage to his brain was ultimately too severe, leading them to make the heartbreaking decision to remove life support. Derek pᴀssed away the following morning.
His family announced his pᴀssing through Derek’s own Instagram account—a page where, only days earlier, he had been sharing the music, performances and experiences that brought him happiness.
“This is Derek’s family,” their message began.
But the family wanted people to remember Derek for far more than the tragedy that took his life.
“Derek brought so much light, humor, and kindness into this world,” they wrote.
Derek was a student, musician and pᴀssionate performer. He loved jazz, singing and marching beneath the stadium lights with the Hawkeye Marching Band. To his family, music was more than something he enjoyed.
They described it as “the language of his soul.” 🎶❤️
His love for performing had also taken him on a remarkable journey during the summer. His family said Derek experienced what they called “the absolute summer of his life” while touring with a drum and bugle corps.
Those memories now carry an even deeper meaning for everyone who knew him.
In his final moments, his family said Derek was comfortable and surrounded by the people who loved him. They also made sure the music he cherished remained close to him.
For his parents, family and friends, the loss is impossible to put into words. For the Hawkeye Marching Band, it means saying goodbye to a young musician who had shared his talent, energy and pᴀssion with those around him. 🕊️
Derek’s death has also raised difficult questions about the safety of students and performers who spend hours outdoors in extreme heat. His family is encouraging people to consider whether more should be done to protect young people during long outdoor events.
As the University of Iowa community mourns, many are remembering Derek not simply for how his story ended, but for how he lived—with music, kindness, laughter and pᴀssion.
Please keep Derek’s parents, family, friends and every member of the Hawkeye Marching Band in your thoughts and prayers. 🙏💔
May Derek rest peacefully, surrounded forever by the music he loved. 🎺🕊️❤️
